ok so here’s a question: we just ordered take out pizza and walked to the restaurant to pick it up. my boyfriend was adamant we had to tip, and i was adamant we didn’t. who is right?

All jobs are required by law to pay at least minimum wage. If they don’t (total of wages+tips), the employer must make up the difference.
Speaking from experience, this isn't really how it works. They'll pay you the difference, and then they'll let you go at some point in the near future for reasons that are Certainly Not That.
