I’m not LDS, but I’m super impressed with how Mormons manage a modern, useful, yet deeply visceral Becoming Adult ritual-process. I’m sure mileage varies, but it’s one of those things I have mentally bookmarked under “how to human better(?)”https://twitter.com/Austen/status/1058056317636497408 …

TBC, I am pretty ultrapacifist & have no intention of finding religion! But I do think people do better when someone expects something of them & they have real opportunities to do things

You see interesting and similar effects in countries with conscripted military service-- it's worth looking at Israel and South Korea to see this model applied secularly, although dramatically less humanitarian

Coming from a religious background (no longer a believer), I‘d say ancients texts were the original self-help guides to living a fulfilling life. There‘s a great deal of value in them, even if we differ on base assumptions and conclusions.

Covey‘s “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” has been referred to, by Clay Christensen (a Mormon), as the secularized distillation of many LDS principles. Using this, and other texts, I suspect we can build strong personal (family?) value systems—sans all/most of the dogma.

Have you heard of "Self-Authoring"? I think it's intriguing in this respect. https://www.selfauthoring.com/

What kind of practices would you suggest importing into secular culture? Having a period in youth where people go to a foreign place and do charity work?
