I’m not LDS, but I’m super impressed with how Mormons manage a modern, useful, yet deeply visceral Becoming Adult ritual-process. I’m sure mileage varies, but it’s one of those things I have mentally bookmarked under “how to human better(?)”https://twitter.com/Austen/status/1058056317636497408 …

On my mission they told us that God had before demanded killing "anything that breathed" (Joshua 11) to clear the promise land. Now He only required two years of perfect obedience, so we were lucky. Like most social work, it was also a powerful impetus to be grateful

So I guess emphasis on the varying mileage. I have mixed feelings on how essential the fundamentalist aspect is for the whole experience.

I hope... not at all essential? Because I’d love to figure out ways to duplicate a firm support structure + some significant degree of necessary trust in young adults w/o any dogmatic elements

It seems you need a strong top-down force to get people to grow like that. Some people will voluntarily do peace corps or teach for America, but not most. What other top-down options are there other than gov (conscription) or god?

Possibly really strong, supportive (+ extended) families?

Hmm, it takes a bit of a cruel task master to precipitate a coming of age. A lot of moms wouldn't let their sons go on missions if they knew their sons were getting mugged. Division of labor among authority figures is helpful. Can't see coddling parents doubling as drill sgts

Yeah, therein lies the challenge — though I think some of us are starting to come around to the realization that there are things far worse than experiencing fears, hurts, losses, etc. & being forever stuck in anxious adolescence is definitely one of them
