I think the first step is admitting that secular culture is (largely) really, really bad at raising *adults*, and probably getting worse

I suspect there’s actually a lot of room for play w/o theocracy. You see similar duty/achievement patterns in e.g. military families/cultures. I’m not sure what the healthiest version of this is, but I kinda want to make an even better one

I think religions in general do a good job of this. Strong communities and focus on the youths transition to adulthood leaves everyone involved better off.

Mm, dunno. I was raised with fuzzy mainstream nondenominational Christianity and didn’t really see any benefit, even after going whole-hog on it in my early teens. Structured fluff is still fluff

A friend and I discussed this at some length, that there just isn't a UK humanist organisation not tied to dogma that provides the social and organisational benefits of the church. Would be curious to know if/when you find a US one. We concluded it needs to be created.

I was raised LDS and have a large, largely LDS family and it's uhhhhhhhhh really toxic in my experience. But yeah, religions have some great coming-of-age rituals!
