I think the first step is admitting that secular culture is (largely) really, really bad at raising *adults*, and probably getting worse

I suspect there’s actually a lot of room for play w/o theocracy. You see similar duty/achievement patterns in e.g. military families/cultures. I’m not sure what the healthiest version of this is, but I kinda want to make an even better one

I think religions in general do a good job of this. Strong communities and focus on the youths transition to adulthood leaves everyone involved better off.

Mm, dunno. I was raised with fuzzy mainstream nondenominational Christianity and didn’t really see any benefit, even after going whole-hog on it in my early teens. Structured fluff is still fluff

On my mission they told us that God had before demanded killing "anything that breathed" (Joshua 11) to clear the promise land. Now He only required two years of perfect obedience, so we were lucky. Like most social work, it was also a powerful impetus to be grateful

I was raised LDS and have a large, largely LDS family and it's uhhhhhhhhh really toxic in my experience. But yeah, religions have some great coming-of-age rituals!

A friend and I discussed this at some length, that there just isn't a UK humanist organisation not tied to dogma that provides the social and organisational benefits of the church. Would be curious to know if/when you find a US one. We concluded it needs to be created.
