“And the question that exists behind them all: isn’t it beneath me? So an entire world of possibilities shuts, and you miss your true calling.”
One of my favorite recent observations is that crisp, generative thinking seems positively correlated with the belief that there are a great many things worth smart people’s time, including in the trades/“blue collar” industries. Seems to hold regardless of class!
Before you reject this out of hand — as I’m sure some of you will be inclined to do — think about why it might be the case. It’s an interesting question.
It should be noted that these schools are *absolutely* doing this to Asian students now, if for arguably less revolting reasons
On the one hand, “let the campus be diverse” is infinitely more palatable than “let the campus be white.” On the other, there may be an unacknowledged visceral discomfort with, say, a 60% Asian campus population. Whites need not be the majority, but only if noone else is, either
“Let the campus be of whichever composition is reflected in the student pop likeliest to succeed,” “let the campus be of whatever composition is reflected in students w/ the greatest academic delta from acceptance to graduation” = nice thoughts that’ll never see the light of day

“It’s all become a kind of rain dance... If students were told that they needed to stand on their heads to get into Harvard, they would do so as eagerly, as diligently, as skillfully, and as thoughtlessly as they do everything else.”pic.twitter.com/JiIbqGauZV
