Trying to identify all my contrarian combos — sets of beliefs that make me insufferable to approx. everybody e.g. kids oughta run free, unsupervised, generating chaos + bruises & possibly requiring an ER trip AND we should ban most kids' organized sports due to concussion risk
I don't think team sports are an adequate replacement for "kid society" (my term for unsupervised, organic kid packs), but I've got nothing against them except insofar as they cause head injuries disproportionately to other things humans can do. All for fixing that, but good luck
Kids are much more creative when they are freely playing as well. They can still learn cooperation, but on their own terms.
You could make it less insufferable (albeit more boring) by explicitly saying that e.g. basketball is perfectly fine, or even that you'd 80/20 by eliminating football only.
Hmm... I don't actually know if I *am* that boring! I don't know if "avoidable brain damage in children" is something we should be 80/20ing. And I'm sure this logic extends to other beloved family stuff — like, is an annual cross-country family road trip too dangerous? Possibly!
