I disagree — I think some of the ideas are more likely to hit tribal nerves, but they’re not more difficult to understand and he does an excellent job of providing context for those (like this reader) who have essentially no familiarity with the subject matter

Doesn't focus on personal stories or examples, it discusses the philosophical questions directly. For you and me that's ideal, but for writing popular non-fiction it's very much not recommended. Most folks don't want to stay in abstractions, need concreteness.

Anyway, I advocated opening with welfare + rights years ago. I reckon that looks like a good idea in retrospect, though who knows how that simplication would have gotten bastardised as it spread! Popularising ideas while preserving fidelity is basically impossible.
