Stubborn Attachments by @tylercowen IS OUT(!) This book finally knocked loose, with minimal pain, an ever-wiggling concern that Effective Altruism may only be part of the grand human story (though a critical one). https://smile.amazon.com/Stubborn-Attachments-Prosperous-Responsible-Individuals/dp/1732265135/ …

EA is essentially about redistribution. It's very easy to find oneself (& everyone around) falling into well-worn political grooves at the mention of that word, often coalescing in a pit fight between that & The Economy, with "fairness" the conceptual gun nobody can keep hold of

"EA is essentially about redistribution." For people focussed on extinction risks which is a decent fraction of EA efforts, that doesn't seem true? Also not sure redistribution is the best framing of anti-factory farming work.

Is there anything outside of 1) Redivide the pie 2) Grow the pie 3) Avoid exploding the pie ? Because I think extinction risks are definitely 3 vs. 1. Animal welfare is pretty clearly 1, in that it consumes some pie & doesn't fit 2 or 3. Admittedly, I was excluding 3 entirely.

If I was trying to stop people assaulting one another, is that 1 to you? That's how I think of work to stop factory farming. Anyway, lots of EA is in practice about redistribution, but I don't think that's an essential aspect to it.

I mean, is "trying to stop people from getting malaria" an example of 1? Yes, I would argue, if you're doing it by moving money around toward that end. That the money gets turned into bed nets (or pamphlets) somewhere along the way doesn't really matter.

(That said, effectively preventing the spread of malaria is a pretty great example of the kind of win Tyler applauds in his book: where redistribution of resources leads to productivity gains and growth. So it's ultimately 1 *and* 2.)
