Stubborn Attachments by @tylercowen IS OUT(!) This book finally knocked loose, with minimal pain, an ever-wiggling concern that Effective Altruism may only be part of the grand human story (though a critical one). https://smile.amazon.com/Stubborn-Attachments-Prosperous-Responsible-Individuals/dp/1732265135/ …

With regard to the second tweet in this thread,
@juliagalef and@robertwiblin disagree with my claim that EA is "essentially about" redistribution. I suspect most EAs do consider redistribution essential to EA's philosophical core, but I leave it to youhttps://twitter.com/robertwiblin/status/1052715779936776193 …Show this threadThanks. Since I never indulged in alcohol I don't have any real experience in giving it up, but from what I've read online and from a coworker who shared his experience, you can expect your circle of friends to radically change (p < .10) depending on how much alcohol was involved before.

If alcohol were so significantly impairing, it's hard to understand why cultures in which most adults drink weren't out-competed into extinction by teetotaling cultures.

I’ve thought about that too. Pet theory: species propagation needs some level of “temporary judgmental impairment” to facilitate crucial risky behavior. It would help explain the recklessness of our peak fertility years too. Super-cautionary, risk-averse behavior stays alone.

I expect society would be better off without alcohol, but that 80% of people who drink benefit from it overall. The harm concentrated in the 20% who use the most, and most irresponsibly. Complicated!
-
Don't necessarily disagree, but curious how you concluded the split is ~80/20?
