On the one hand, “let the campus be diverse” is infinitely more palatable than “let the campus be white.” On the other, there may be an unacknowledged visceral discomfort with, say, a 60% Asian campus population. Whites need not be the majority, but only if noone else is, either

And these elite private universities function by selecting the students who are going to be elite. Asian Americans are still underrepresented in politics, judges etc, so it undermines their whole project. Basically elite universities are a bit disgusting.
