What else do you think might be worth their time? Surely not "the clergy, the military, or electoral politics"? Trusting in the market's judgement of their comparative advantage is far from the worst option.
Not sure this is the market talking — seems plausible to consider intertia more an artificial gravity, generated by an increasingly brutal admissions arms race that has thinned the cognitive bones of elite children like Thoroughbreds bred for speed at the cost of everything else

"Love of money" translates to doing whatever the market decides your comparative advantage is. It's not elite-student inertia that leads other firms to pay Bain and Morgan and Google as much as they do (though it may be some other distortion).
