Real value creation *does* happen in the world; if your pet field is showing up at the trough but not producing anything approaching proportionate value, "embattled" is precisely what it ought to be.       I think I must disagree here, wrt "little effort". At least the academics I follow (mostly on my other Twitter handle) they go through a lot of effort to eke out something that other academics will grudgingly accept into journals or conferences as being "noteworthy" enough.

      Except, since I'm only barely involved in academia myself, I'm probably the worst person to debate that any further. Also it's true that that the discipline I follow (CS) is different from most.

          I think I get you now. I was viewing all of academia as a field (as opposed to corporate America, Silicon Valley startup scene, blah blah etc.)
