Decide what principles you're standing for; figure out *in advance* what you're trying to accomplish. Play it safe or don't. But if you allow heads to roll to save your own wretched skin when it turns out that your choices aren't well-received, you're plainly devoid of integrity.
That Physics has historically been massively male-dominated is true, that the sciences have been largely meritocratic is at least arguable. This is a claim that could be debated, but it is not an attack or threat, and if we keep confusing the two academia is in BIG trouble.
