I don't agree - if someone has power over you without consent, you're a slave. Stoicism is about reshaping your value set to become your own master.
I think a person’s values are probably critical enough to want distributed power over them — consciously and consensually distributed. I’ve seen people veer dangerously when they’re not somewhat beholden to others

Absolutely! The critical factor is whether authority is imposed/arbitrary, or consensual. I very much endorse the idea of caring what your chosen teachers think - and of the importance of choosing your teachers wisely.
