I’m unexpectedly bonding easily with the Stoics — “to such a person, glasses are amazing; to everyone else, a glass is just a glass, and it is half empty to boot.”pic.twitter.com/aBnJYHCuKx

Stoicism is a possible answer to Peter Thiel's prompt ("tell me something that's true that nobody agrees with") — that life isn't the linear acquisition of more accomplishments, friends, things & likewise more status, safety, comfort. You may fail. You may *die* in a "fail" state

On its face, Stoicism seemed to me like a possible complacency-enabler. If you fully grok how ephemeral ALL things are, from your car to your job to your love and right down to your sight... ability to walk... mind... do you keep white-knuckling it through 80-hour work weeks?

And maybe you *don't*, but if you don't, it's probably because whatever the lived experience + material product of those 80-hour weeks is *isn't actually something that you want for the sum output of your life*. You're trying to buy a new job title + raise or whatever.

Not trying to dismantle the career ladder here, but after a year or two of this nonsense you're not going to walk away from the promotion when something interesting lands at your feet. Sunk costs are anchors. Any philosophy that frees you of this makes you *broadly more free*

What do you think accounts for the trend that the Stoics fall in and out of fashion every couple of decades? Would be super interesting to look at the data. What is the cultural environment for in and out. Maybe @SimonDeDeo has tips --

It'd be the Epicureans sometimes, except that people still believe Christian propaganda about them from 1800 years ago; they have really similar attitudes towards all the things people love about Stoics (no hedonic treadmill, living the good life and enjoying the simple things)

(Disputes between neo-Stoics and neo-Epicureans are often on the order of "what questions are most important?" and neither side can easily dunk on the other; I think it's well worth looking into if you're inclined to either)

Here's what Google N-Grams says about the Stoics (for British English only). A peak at the beginning of mid-Victorian, a peak before WW1, a peak before (just at) the beginning of the Great Depression, a peak in late 1950s. All associated, in fact, with boom, luxury and peace.pic.twitter.com/ebhnY5Gl3G

Interesting! But also, I wouldn't call it a "peak" in the late 1950s — it only looks like one because of the very noticeable dip in the early 1940s, which *might* have been less about a loss of interest & more an understandable shift to ultra-salient current events

The "peaks" don't seem credible; they're likely artifacts of the smoothing algorithm run on a tiny sample size. Unsmoothed, the spikes look random to me, modulated by a broad period of high relative frequency 1880-1950.pic.twitter.com/NU2N5NXrCn
