Ideally, childhood should be all about games that you may or may not be able to win: stretching yourself, figuring out the contours of your interests & talents. But we're so absorbed with success & the concept of "giftedness" that we easily spread fear of failure to our kids

If I can't win ALL the games, am I really that good? As soon as that question even enters your mind, you've lost, and a lot of parents inadvertently put it there by insisting "...of course you can, you're gifted."

Not that I'm in any position to give parental advice, but if asked, I'd say this for sure — make sure your kid has space to do plenty of things where success, even partial success, is unlikely. Important that they not be pushed into doing such things, but have access to them.
