Have you read Bullshit Jobs? Graeber's theory is that like 50% of the jobs are not worth doing. They're busy work designed to keep the masses distracted, consuming, and forming feudalism-like hierarchies that signal status between bosses.
I haven't read the book and don't know whether I'd accept that frame, but afaict success signaling *can* distort markets & spending a lot of money is almost as good a signal as making a lot of it
