Like adults, children *will*encounter people who lie to them. That's unavoidable, and probably not a bad thing in small doses! Unfortunately, many children do not have a *single* adult consistently present in their lives who is fully or near-fully honest with them.https://twitter.com/JosephDise/status/1041658323911798784 …

I don't have a strong opinion on "holiday lies." I think some parents do a pretty good job of sort of "tipping off" their kids that this is a pretending-game for fun, but it's tricky. I do think these stories helped solidify lying to children as a cultural norm, which is no good.

Powerful. Yes. The beginning of infinity is there for adults and children who are willing to deal with their challenges as honestly as they can. As a parent of small children, this is a really good reminder.

I think it matters how and at what age we experience a necessary disillusionment about human affairs, and the cynicism engendered by youthful encounters with a deeply distrustful environment is incredibly hard to shake or revise.

this is 100% the thing that separates my dad from everyone else i may have rebelled or disobeyed out of disagreement with his prescriptions or conclusions but i never had to doubt that he was being truthful. i can't think of a single time he lied to me

funny enough this was the example i was going to go with at age six i came to question the logistical reasonability and consistency of the Santa mythos my mom invented shrinking powder like pixie dust my dad would always phrase answers very carefully https://twitter.com/januzellij/status/1041719612767969280?s=21 …
