Lies communicate a lack of trust. We use them to manipulate others' perception of the world so they'll feel or behave differently from how they would if they had the truth. I think we underestimate how hard it is on kids to have to grow up in a distrustful environment.

The damage lying causes is underestimated because people don’t realize lies hurt children much more than adults. A lie, when you know what the truth is, just damages trust. A lie when you have very few ideas about the world can cause heaps of damage and confusion.
