Two assumptions possibly baked into this lie: (1) that kids lack any nuance; that something must be perceived as irreplaceable to be valuable at all, & (2) that kids are incapable of treating objects gently unless thoroughly browbeaten

And then we all told stories about being lied to as children, and how it had shaken us. This was a ladies’ night with a few of my most brilliant female friends. We all recounted being affected *for years* as a result of feeling misled or “tricked” by adults.
