I don’t see anything wrong with just switching without even announcing it. Keep your old address running along side in your mail client whilst routinely replying from your new address.

I did the same for several years, although the last few years were just spam, mostly... I did have a fit of going and finding the last few online accounts (Bugzillas, mostly) that used the old address. 1/

Perhaps a silent email forwarding to your new address, then just respond as normal from your new address with an info signature explaining the change. OR Use this opportunity to start a new life.

forward the gmail one to your new inbox, reply from the new always, drop gmail when no longer needed
