Starting to think we're approaching a real breaking point in education. 15+ years of reform efforts have netted no gains in test scores, the only thing we seem to care about. On a cost-per-point basis, the US has the least cost-effective education system in the world.

I think the big Achilles heel in this system is the summer vacation. Parents are neurotic about "playing school" when it's required, but if someone could design summer programs that demonstrably beat schools in outcome, then you need only to make it year round.

All the well paid professionals I know are doing homeschool or private/co-op. We had to go co-op so our 3 year old! wouldn't be stuck at a desk all day.
