Holt calls this particular thing “a strategy of deliberate failure,” and people do this a lot — setting themselves up for a soft landing in failure at the cost of any real chance at success

People fall into the games they’re best suited to play. IMO this partially explains why the people doing the most useful/interesting things are often very weird, or even unpleasant, as well as brilliant... if they’d been well-rounded, they could have won conventional games
