Holt calls this particular thing “a strategy of deliberate failure,” and people do this a lot — setting themselves up for a soft landing in failure at the cost of any real chance at success

Noticing a kid struggle to complete a puzzle, then start jamming pieces into obviously wrong places for a laugh, John Holt says: “If you can’t play a game the way it is supposed to be played, turn it into a game you can play.” I think this explains a lot of adult social behavior

People fall into the games they’re best suited to play. IMO this partially explains why the people doing the most useful/interesting things are often very weird, or even unpleasant, as well as brilliant... if they’d been well-rounded, they could have won conventional games
