It’s jarring when they leave school. Having now tasted freedom, I have a strong bias against returning to a school-like environment myself. I can viscerally feel the contrast between worried exam prep and excited, genuine curiosity.

Familiarity, not only contrast, often encourages change. Intimately familiar with their parents’ flaws, children often resolve to be different.
