We’ve got to start valuing our data more. Every individual is sitting on a gold mine of information just waiting to be fed to any number of ML algorithms. Paid Facebook doesn’t solve that totally, but it will make people value their data more. A good start.

I voted (b). The thing I find useful about ads is discovering *things I wasn't previously aware of*. Which is what TV ads can achieve yet internet ones often pitch me stuff I already purchase/have/know about. But Jaron Lanier is right: stuff works way better when a paid service.

If ads were more like Amazon’s book recommendations, then I’d be happy to have them. I’m ignorant of the vast majority of products I might find useful, so better ads would help both the seller and the buyer. I find I’m mostly annoyed by ads when they’re totally irrelevant to me.
