wrt societal impact, I honestly think fully-automated cars are more akin to seasteading than "upgrade to transit system"

I think this will trigger another innovation boom. On its face it'll probably favor those w/ pre-existing capital & government connections, but there will be lots of space to carve out for those w/ logistics savvy or a keen eye for rapidly shifting culture/mass behavior patterns

It's a new channel for products & services, similar to smartphones, way more impactful (e.g. being physical) Current labor associated w/ driving will be displaced, expect luddites & increase in regulation to fight automation Distances will seem shorter, not requiring attention

My greatest expectations are on motorhomes. W\o any driving they may become bigger (challenging now), allow sleeping while moving, commuting may disappear, all weekends spent far from work, close to family & friends,… Also: disruption to real estate:https://twitter.com/nathanwaters/status/949640102304612352?s=19 …

this is the exact same wording Dean Kamen used to describe "it", before he unveiled the segway. changes economy, how cities work and look, people will build cities around it, etc. ("it" was the popular codename for his yet to be named product)

Family friend is a leading control systems academic. Worked on a lot of auto projects, in addition to aeronautics. Thinks autonomous VTOL (electric flying taxis) are very close, and will be widespread before self driving cars. Even cooler

What do you mean about competing for inhabitants? One impact I hope for is that standard office hours will become less standard, due to demand-based pricing. Should drive down peak capacity needs for both cars and roads.
