Vocabulary is a toolkit for communicating ideas that serves its purpose less effectively at both tails. Fifty dollar words are intellectually gaudy. Gold-plated bad ideas are still bad ideas

This seems true for mass market UI. But vocabulary is also the medium for certain art forms. In poetry, e.g., I’m not sure the goal is to simply communicate an idea to the largest audience with the least friction, nor should it be.

True. The tails also seem to be defined relative to the audience and subject matter, creating a mismatch component. Slight mismatch can be worked around, significant mismatch erodes communication, extreme mismatch wraps around into comedy.
