BART is a great example of how disambiguating lines by end stations is not a great idea 

I’d bet most SF residents couldn’t point to Dublin/Pleasanton on a map
Using those towns for indicating line direction just creates more confusion

But you would need East Bay North, EBNorthEast, EBSouthEast and EBSouth for directions. Super confusing. And when they extend to San Jose, it becomes the East Bay South Bay

Or use numbers or letters like the NYC subways. There are only 5 routes. My guess the person who designed the station names copied the CA highway names, which use cities as destinations instead of NSEW as the rest of the country does.
