BART is a great example of how disambiguating lines by end stations is not a great idea 
I’d bet most SF residents couldn’t point to Dublin/Pleasanton on a map
Using those towns for indicating line direction just creates more confusion
For BART, "San Francisco," "SF Airport," "East Bay North," "East Bay East," and "East Bay South" would have been *super* useful for me when I was new to the area.

But you would need East Bay North, EBNorthEast, EBSouthEast and EBSouth for directions. Super confusing. And when they extend to San Jose, it becomes the East Bay South Bay

The BART solution is also used in Paris.

Or use numbers or letters like the NYC subways. There are only 5 routes. My guess the person who designed the station names copied the CA highway names, which use cities as destinations instead of NSEW as the rest of the country does.
