Interesting phenomenon: I often hear the concern that most kids can't cut it in an environment that makes space for intensive, self-directed projects; that's a "smart kid" thing. And the assumption seems to be that the "smart kids" are the ones who do well w/ "memorize & test."
If there were some opportunity to sit with "God" on this & take an above-the-clouds view, I think we'd see a very messy set of relationships between test success, "smart" as culturally defined, IQ, "creativity" & the currently horrifically underrated *ability to generate novelty*
It's probably more reasonable to use the % who can't handle self directed projects as a proxy for "% whose psychological sovereignty has been destroyed by age X". Probably some version of "smart" currently being used which is more accurately high psychological resiliency.
I hate this because I cant remember shit. So I was treated special in school and struggled with every test. But I can have an intelligent conversation about it. I run entire IT departments now. I felt like a fish asked to climb a ladder. Stupid, worthless and abused.
