Would you not be at a strict disadvantage to a fresh grad who's spent years reading and analyzing books of practical value to the career path she wants, who's spent considerable time working on self-directed projects that developed skills you had to learn "on the job"?
Above, I've cited evidence that most college graduates do not have the one specific skill you've said college is for. I think part of the reason for that is that students are so often compelled to develop it in the context of work they fully realize is of little practical value.
As @naval has said, reading for love is the best way to develop as a reader; IMO, a major problem with our educational system is that it compels students to "develop reading skills" on material they haven't chosen. Counterproductive. It's no wonder so many grads are poor readers.
