20% of college *graduates* can’t correctly perform basic math operations. Two thirds can’t read a complex book & comprehend what they’ve read.pic.twitter.com/gxbEq9gDts
U.S. colleges are incentivized to advertise themselves to prospective students they would never actually accept, because dismissing those kids demonstrates “selectivity” & boosts their USNWR rankings.pic.twitter.com/ppVUzC3A6m
Some employers continue to turn down highly qualified & experienced candidates on the basis of SAT scores earned decades prior — scores that are very effectively gamed with extended-time exemptions & test-prep tutors that only affluent families can affordpic.twitter.com/dPVi8KMAbX
“You did this to Bill Gates, then you did this to Mark Zuckerberg. You have done this to every creative entrepreneur here. All we do is drop out with a bitter taste in our mouth.”pic.twitter.com/1YDp5ovpLw
Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg weren’t pushed out of Harvard out of frustration, though. They simply succeeeded early. And neither of them studied “leadership and organizations.” Those are all “practical” topics that don’t belong in a traditional college undergrad curriculum
...why don't "practical" topics belong in an undergrad curriculum??
Because that’s a graduate level specialist topic. The same way you probably shouldn’t waste your time majoring in “business.” You’re supposed to learn how to think and broaden your intellectual horizons not go to trade school.
There’s more that can be learned on the job and more effectively working than trying to take classes in a “practical” topic which always change. I’d be more interested in someone with a history degree than someone who studied “leadership and organizations” as an undergrad focus
Well, you'll certainly find more grads with pre-fab degrees than grads with degrees they went out of their way to design around their particular passions, so I suppose you'll have a considerably larger pool.
