I said "under" but I'm not counting spending on charter schools which are mostly a scam despite the good ones

needs an option for 'about the right amount of money is being spent, but it's being spent on all the wrong things'

funding distribution is grossly distorted by local tax revenue differences but the problems in underfunded districts are not only lack of funds and the problems in overfunded districts are not only about wrong priorities

as an exchange student I was a senior in an American high school (Kansas). I was surprised how much money was poorly allocated. e.g. - Brand new math books (at that level, calculus does not change) - multi thousand $ touchboards - An AC that made people wear sweaters in summer

Education is the silver bullet. Education quality is driven by teacher quality. We pay teachers ½ or ¼ of what we pay other critical professionals. Lots of potentially great teachers decide they'll be happier elsewhere. I don't see how you solve that without spending more money.

This is a really common belief, but the median teacher salary in the U.S. is $58,950, which is just about flush with the median household income across all Americans

Funding is less important that designing incentives for students to learn; the available job opportunities and cost of college have a larger effect on incentives than teachers.

I don’t know if that’s the case, or if it’s because private school numbers are deflated by religious schools that pay less.

I volunteered at a private school once. Most teachers there had switched over from public schools & taken a pay cut for exactly those reasons. Headmaster said they were getting requests from public-school teachers all the time.
