Hm. Is that good or bad though? Probably depends on the actions being absolved. Is this absolution why such harmful behaviors/bad actors persist in religious systems like the Catholic Church?

Yes, I think so. But on the other side, you have a lot of people saying that what they want is empowerment when what they really need is reassurance and acceptance. Empowerment is too scary. It’s tough to juggle.

Agree, people need atonement, forgiveness, absolution. But therapists can’t truly absolve bc they can’t speak for a community. Contrast with Catholic priests, who can and do. Therapy can and should help people seek absolution from the right people and in the right way, tho

Sharp analysis. Could also be a selection bias inherent in the types of people who seek secular therapy vs confessionals. Think there’s research on how secular-minded people are more neurotic and harder to console in general.
