It's strange to me how the narratives around electric cars are "much environment, so green", and electric scooters are all "tech bros are destroying the sidewalk commons". The thing I appreciate about electric scooters is how they can be combined with public transit. 
There’s a “notice your confusion” element to the scooter thing; it should’ve been obvious that scooters wouldn’t largely appeal to the ultra-rich *or* the impoverished, but to people in between.
