An addendum to this thread: there are good alternatives to call-out culture, e.g. dynamics built around the principles in @slatestarcodex's comment policy → honesty + social gentleness. Good point. It's just hard to break ties when doing so means you automatically fall on the "wrong" side of the "You're either for us or against us" ideology taking hold in these groups.

It's really hard! I think that's why most people don't leave until they inadvertently end up on the wrong side, and suddenly don't have access to the social capital they'd built up while trying to play by the more toxic rules
