Which I can kinda understand? If someone's just Tweeting you can hide them from your TL, but if someone DMs you then the Twitter platform makes sure you see it. So a DM could be seen as requiring engagement in the way a public post does not...
I think that's correct, and should be top-of-mind when writing a DM. I'm tempted to say that you should never DM a person if your intention isn't to become closer to them / resolve something that will help you think better of them (rather than e.g. "speak your mind").
I like to use DMs to ask questions that may need a longer response than 280. I think the good and the bad with public discourse is that everybody can see it, so people feel socially threatened when you disagree with them. I always have thought that if people put as much time into
researching and developing sound opinions/knowledge bases on topics as they did call me a fucking idiot for disagreeing with them they might have an easier time convincing me to compromise subscribe to part of their belief system. It's much easier to use a get out of jail free
