After plastic bottles and bags, straws seem to be the latest convenience item under attack by environmentalists. Numbers are hard to come by, but a back-of-the-envelope calculation tells me, straws account for perhaps 1/1000 of global plastic consumption.

Assuming using consumable plastics is in some sense a bad thing, anti-straw seems a reasonable move given that they're often just obviously superfluous and don't even require replacement. And, as with bags, there are massive distribution chains that can possibly be manipulated.

Tbc, it makes more sense to go after sit-in restaurants rather than takeaway places, since in the latter case the lid plus straw are actually pretty functional
