Nobody should give themselves too much credit for lazy nonconformism — it’s not difficult to spot a few instances of The Mainstream is Dumb; separating wheat from chaff far outside the mainstream is tougher & usually requires conceptual modeling that can pay its own rent
Also: if you’re getting most of your social fuzzies from calling out chaff, you should still question your ability to identify wheat
I feel like this is a pretty good test actually.
By the time one is getting social fuzzies for calling out chaff one is normally really just affirming membership in a group of some kind. It's when calling out chaff might result in some of your relationships blowing up but you do it anyway that it becomes really admirable.
