Nobody should give themselves too much credit for lazy nonconformism — it’s not difficult to spot a few instances of The Mainstream is Dumb; separating wheat from chaff far outside the mainstream is tougher & usually requires conceptual modeling that can pay its own rent

Legitimate independent thinkers acknowledge both when the mainstream is correct, and when the avant-garde is incorrect. If you’re specifically anti-mainstream, you’re not trying. Also: Independent thinkers should probably just be called thinkers.
