Santa Monica and surrounds are nice. The beach cities (Redondo, Hermosa, Manhattan) are reachable from N. Redondo and Lawndale but they're cheaper and boringer.

Skew towards minimizing time expected in cars. Any commute starts to organize your life in unexpected ways

If you have a commute to work that will decide where you live. Santa Monica/Westside is where most tech companies are, expensive but cheaper than SF South of the airport is more of a beachtown vibe. Silverlake/Echo Park is where a lot of interesting events are.

+1 to this one.
#LA metro area is significantly more decentralized than SF, so Commute Rules Everything Around Me. Good luck Mason.

Santa Monica are beautiful, hip, boring and expensive. Downtown-Silverlake is uber hip, dirty and you don't need a car. Koreatown is a good value with no parking. Beverly Hills is dumb. Don't move to the Valley. You will party your life away in WeHo. Hollywood? Meh...

I live in Santa Monica and endorse this characterization.

South Pasadena for the quaint small town feel (& easy metro line access to downtown LA and Pasadena).
