I mute pretty liberally, and the #1 way to make the list is to make it clear that you either didn’t read the tweet you’re replying to carefully, or that you privileged your pet point so strongly that you willfully misinterpreted others’ thoughts in order to make your own relevant

Interesting. I’m curious, how do you define “owe” in this specific context?
I think I "owe" responses (or at least acknowledgment likes) to people with whom I have pre-existing relationships (in which they've acted amiably/charitably), people I've engaged in conversation in ways that requested some effort (e.g. asking questions), etc.

In general, I try to get to the bottom of it when I think there's some valid (+ interesting!) disagreement... tweets like the type I'm citing aren't really valid (they're not based on a claim I actually made) & they're usually not interesting. I mute to avoid getting dragged in.
