Average tuition for a year at a US private college is $35k. Nobody should pay that. Offering $140k for 1 year of regular time with any one of the best minds in your field of choice would be a strictly better use of your resources (and probably theirs, if they'd otherwise teach).

Agreed that this is a huge problem. But is it wiser to go into the institution with a reputation but theoretical protections plus the ability to swerve and take other options within the institution, or to invest hugely in a 1-to-1 with no safety net at all?

Ultimately I think this would work better in a Neal Stephenson novel than under our current legal system. You pay the expert $140k, you learn, but in the contract it says that if he hurts you, a drone comes and exacts a physical price
