"Why is x the case?" is often a lot less useful than several iterated rounds of "why is [very plausible not-x] *not* the case?"

You probably already have a hypothesis or two about why x is the case, and if you put x & not-x in the same sandbox you’re less likely to come up with anything except the same hypothesis reworded to dismiss not-x
