Rational thought consists of conjecture and criticism and nothing else. Talk of 'argument for' something is shorthand for shooting down opponents of a conjecture.
"Why is x the case?" is often a lot less useful than several iterated rounds of "why is [very plausible not-x] *not* the case?"

I think most people automatically interpret this as necessarily multiplayer, but real thinking is a game you play with yourself... and for it to be a game, it's necessary that you not know with certainty in advance "who" will win each round, and that you not kneecap the underdog

In other words, this is the scientific method. Instead of going out to confirm something, its better to try and disprove it. If it withstands the test of time, its most likely the correct explanation.

It's not THE scientific method. One could also have several models and see which one is best supported by the data.
