Space to think — to think *interesting* thoughts — is obviously vital, but you can bring that to the gaps in whatever experience you’re consuming. This is really what it means to be engaged. It’s just as crucial as the dedicated time for thought; the two assist one another

Reading books and watching films are creative acts. One has to interpret (and visualise if reading) the meanings of the story, which ultimately requires guesswork (arguably a foundation for creative conjecture). Some stories are harder to interpret than others though.
