In my dream school, anyone who says "stay on task" will have to go sit in the corner & think about what they've done

Interesting. Ability to stay on task is an incredibly valuable life skill, one that my unmedicated ADHD prevents me from mastering, unfortunately.

Additionally, treating poor focus as a failure of character can (1) delay diagnosis or the development of positive coping strategies for non-neurotypical people & (2) prevent considering the very real possibility that the lesson/activity offered is subpar, boring, or unproductive

Who suggested “treating poor focus as a failure of character”? Ability to proactively focus is simply a very useful life skill; having it or not says nothing about the “character” of an individual.

Poor focus is very widely equated to laziness, which is why it’s not generally considered unreasonable to admonish or further punish children for it.

Clearly the behavior you describe happens frequently, but imo it’s not really relevant to my point, which is that diligence/conscientiousness/grit/proactivity/etc should be encouraged.
