Mebbe view it as a balance vs. a binary choice, and then be thoughtful about the balance others strike, and the one you want to strike. Too many great professionals work below their potential for impact, and too many poseurs get higher up the ladder than they should.
A buddy of mine thinks there are two kinds of PMs — “builders” & “career builders”. The former do whatever it takes to get shit done, while the latter worry about career, title etc. Little do they know that real business impact drives career growth, not the other way around :)
