Bumping a late night post... This is the most impressive satellite imagery I've seen of fires.https://twitter.com/weatherdak/status/1213376874065252353 …

The fires, themselves, are crazy but we also haven't seen something like this before because Australia doesn't own a next-gen satellite. So we don't get 1-2.5 min images of the country, very often.

The only other event, of recent memory, that I think would provide similar imagery is some of the Siberia fires. Again, another country (Japan) would have to point the satellite at it for this high-res of imagery.

The GeoColor & fire temperature of SE Australia on Saturday. The type of resolution we're used to seeing. Still remarkable imagery. (http://col.st/AgxIH )pic.twitter.com/ZsJLXQd3nW

As the cloud is moving in one direction, does this mean it’s in the stratosphere? And is being circulated to the rest of the world? Sorry if that’s the wrong term/a stupid question.

Some of the smoke does inject into the stratosphere via rapidly rising air and pyrocumulonimbus clouds. But most stays in troposphere and does spread. You can see some of the smoke plume that spread eastward in this image: https://go.nasa.gov/2Fn8koy pic.twitter.com/1eQgTjB5j0
