This is a big deal. It means if people have broken or unlicensed AV, or AV vendors who aren't adding registry key (see spreadsheet, many aren't planning to) they're not going to get ANY new security patches via Windows Update service. Check compat here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/184wcDt9I9TUNFFbsAVLpzAtckQxYiuirADzf3cL42FQ/edit?usp=sharing …https://twitter.com/GossiTheDog/status/950325474022092800 …

Microsoft have added the following text to their KB article to clarify that unless the AV compatibility registry key is set, Windows Update will not delivery January's *or all future* security updates. Organisations and InfoSec vendors, take strong note. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4072699/january-3-2018-windows-security-updates-and-antivirus-software … pic.twitter.com/mrYpt1IK3f

Or if you have no AV (e.g. Windows Defender is disabled), you will also not get the patch via Windows Update in my testing. Which seems sort of silly if you ask me.

For example, here's a screenshot of a Windows 10 system that has Defender disabled via group policy. It doesn't get the #Spectre / #Meltdown updates installed automatically via Windows Update.pic.twitter.com/Emn4PNryOS

MSFT does say in that article: In cases where customers can’t install or run antivirus software, Microsoft recommends manually setting the registry key as described below in order to receive the January 2018 security updates.. Still silly tho
