And to be clear: Mandatory ASLR doesn't necessarily make exploitation *impossible*. But it *DOES* block known exploits in the wild, which obviously is a good thing.

How about mandatory DEP? Is that a thing and if so, is it safe to enforce it on things like EQNEDT32.EXE?

Mandatory DEP is a thing, and it's configurable via the EMET gui. It's safe for eqnedt32.exe, and pretty much most modern software.
